FUNCTIONAL MOVEMENT SCREENING

January 10, 2015

Functional Movements Systems defines the screening as...

FMS is the screening tool used to identify limitations or asymmetries in seven fundamental movement patterns that are key to functional movement quality in individuals with no current pain complaint or known musculoskeletal injury.

These movement patterns are designed to provide observable performance of basic loco motor, manipulative and stabilizing movements by placing an individual in extreme positions where weaknesses and imbalances become noticeable if appropriate mobility and motor control is not utilized.

Fitness Fact:

You are 2.6 times more likely to get injured if you have 15% less flexibility in one side.

Every time you exercise, move, sit or perform every day activities, you teach your body movement patterns.  These pattens influence how you will continue to move in the future.  For example, when you sit, you teach your body that you require shortened hip flexors, hamstrings and calf muscles.  No wonder our lower back hurts when we stand up after a long day in the car or at the desk.  By participating in a FMS test you will learn foam rolling, stretches and exercises that will take dysfunctional movement patterns and correct them so your body can move properly.  Imagine if you take that tight body that has been sitting all day and decide that a good way to counteract all that sitting is with a vigorous workout.  Now you are putting stress on an already dysfunctional system.  By cleaning up your movement patterns you will reduce your chance of a non contact injury by 35 to 50%.  Fixing any asymmetries in your body will reduce you chance of injury by 3 times.  Inefficient movements cause compensation.  Compensation not only leads to injury but also decreased performance.  In order to get the most out of each workout and the effort that you put into it, make sure you are moving properly first.
